The Social Sciences prepare you for the world. You will get the most out of our wonderful world if you understand its diversity, its development, its issues and its humanity.

The Social Sciences provide students with a wide range of opportunities to broaden their experiences and skills to enable them to be engaged and socially aware members of society. In Year 9 and Year 10 all students study Junior Social Science; this is a combination of all of our senior subjects, Geography, History, Art History, Classics, Sociology and Tourism. From Year 11, students can specialise in one or more of these subjects.

The Social Science department is highly successful in all aspects of academia from scholarship to unit standards. We pride ourselves in being able to provide a holistic education, ensuring all learners achieve their potential and academic goals. The Social Science department also offers a wide range of opportunities for education outside the classroom as we understand the importance of fieldwork in bringing our subjects to life.

Our alumni go on to experience success in their chosen fields. Our excellent track record of ensuring students achieve University Entrance means students leave us with a wider variety of options for their futures. We believe we can offer your child exceptional building blocks for their bright future.

Studying history, art history, and classics at Rangitoto College has been one of the best parts of my high school experience. I particularly enjoyed learning about a wide variety of cultures and time periods and having the freedom to extend my learning more independently through taking NZQA Scholarships in these subjects. All in all, these subjects have taught me to think critically, engage with the world around me in a more meaningful way, and have set me up well for tertiary study at Auckland University.

As an educator, I believe the most important aspect of what we do is growing people. In my role, this means growing students to be fully informed global citizens and supporting staff to be leaders in their fields. Rangitoto College has a history of academic excellence whilst also producing well-rounded individuals, and that is what we continually strive for in the Social Sciences. I am fortunate to work with passionate and professional colleagues who relentlessly seek improvement.
