This group is aimed towards promoting the beauty of the culture through its traditional dance and is open to anyone and everyone who would like to join. Samoa is a beautiful country in the Pacific and, similarly to many other countries within that area, is also starting to lose its culture as people forget their natural roots and traditions. In order to counter this issue, our Siva group will be working on revitalising and embracing the Samoan culture through movement.
One of the many values within this group is its inclusivity. No matter what your nationality, ethnicity, values, gender or age are anybody and anyone can join this group! All that is necessary and needed is a love of exploring different cultures along with an open mind. Our practices will mainly include dance learning and teaching but may occasionally include a few cultural lessons on different traditions of Samoa in order to further embrace the experience.
In order for your participation to be noted on your diploma you must perform at one big event along with one Pacifica Whānau Hui and you must also attend 45 dance practice sessions throughout the year.
A big event for our group includes the Māori and Pacific Success Evening, Pīpīwharauroaa festival, and the Enrolments Evening. Hence, you must perform at one of these listed events in order for recognition of participation to be included on your diploma. Our Pacifica Whānau Hui is a check-in event with our Pacifica students and their whānau where we may perform. You must attend and perform at one of these huis. There are two whānau huis in total throughout the year.
