In Health and Physical Education, students develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and motivation needed to make informed decisions. They also explore how their actions and thinking can contribute to their own well-being, the well-being of others, and the wider society.

At Rangitoto College, students have the opportunity to learn and develop fundamental skills across a wide range of physical activities through our Physical Education programme. In the junior years, students engage in diverse activities and make use of our excellent facilities. In the senior school, Physical Education is closely linked with theoretical learning, allowing students to deepen their understanding of movement, performance, and health.

Our Health programme is designed to create a safe and supportive environment where students learn essential life skills and build positive relationships. We encourage students to reflect on and understand the attitudes and values of themselves, others, and society. The programme nurtures mental wellbeing, empowering students to explore their personal identities, strengthen self-esteem, and make informed, positive life choices. We believe that challenges make life interesting—and overcoming them makes life meaningful.

We offer a strong progression of full-credit subjects through to Year 13:

  • Junior Health and Physical Education (compulsory)
  • Physical Education: Year 11 – Year 12 – Year 13
  • Sports Science (extension option): Year 11 – Year 12 – Year 13
  • Health: Year 11 – Year 12 – Year 13

All senior subjects lead to Scholarship, one of New Zealand’s most prestigious academic awards. Rangitoto College has been one of the top-performing schools in this curriculum area for the past two years.

I am passionate about Health as it is not only my favourite subject, but it teaches me a lot about myself, my peers and the people around me. Health offers me skills to use for further education inside and outside of the school, and has helped me develop a mindset that is more empathetic and confident.

Teaching is about people and in my role that includes both adults and students. Working with a variety of people in different situations is both positive and stimulating. At Rangitoto College, pupils and staff work as a team with a common goal and purpose. The amount that is achieved at any one time at this school is always impressive and, just as importantly, we are always attempting to do better.
