Our Rock programme is well known for its achievements, with students increasingly recognised for their creativity at a national level.

The Rock programme at Rangitoto College consists of a structured course at a Year 9 level in which students are placed into a band, rehearse with a band mentor, learn how to write and arrange songs, and gain experience with the technologies around modern rock set-ups. Performing is a significant component of the course.

Students coming into Year 9 are able to select Year 9 Rock Band Core Music at the time of enrolment via the Music Survey in the online enrolment form, and will then be required to submit an audition video. Successful applicants will be notified in November prior to starting in Year 9 the following February.

After Year 9, students are encouraged to form their own bands with the intention of writing songs together and taking part in the Smokefree Rockquest. Several solo artists and duos will also take part in this competition. Students in the Rock programme are supported via access to facilities, preparation for competitions, performance opportunities and recording of songs for adjudication when required.

Performance opportunities are numerous and varied, and include school concerts and ceremonies, Open Week for new students, regional and national competitions, local community events. Our Rock Bands & Rocky Road evening showcases our Smokefree Rockquest entrants and features some inspiring alumni artists too.
