Te Kawerau ā Maki

Te Kawerau ā Maki are one of the iwi that hold mana whenua in our area. Working with Te Kawerau ā Maki, is an important part of building strong and respectful partnerships that reflect our role as teachers in a bicultural Aotearoa. Through this collaboration, we are able to bring iwi knowledge into our teaching, helping students and staff better understand local histories and Māori perspectives.

We are currently having ongoing conversations with Iwi Representatives, Curriculum Leaders, Head of Departments, to discuss how we can implement Iwi-specific mātauranga into our junior courses. This will further strengthen the connection that our ākonga (students) have to the lessons being taught and continue to develop a bi-cultural partnership with Māori.

We continue to support our staff in creating a culturally safe and mātauranga-rich curriculum, where all ākonga can understand the significance of the whenua that they stand on, at Rangitoto.

This partnership also supports well-being in our community and helps deepen our understanding of Māori values and ways of thinking, which is key to building a more inclusive and bicultural Aotearoa.
