In Term 2 the Year 11 Geography students visited the Waitakere and Cascades Rivers in the Waitakere Ranges. Students collected primary data in order to answer their research question regarding the health of the river. The data they collected included temperature, pH, water clarity, and macroinvertebrate counts. We were fortunate to be joined by environmental scientists from PDP, an environmental consultancy. The scientists demonstrated the technical methods used to collect data from a river. Students then enjoyed taking turns with the equipment – even managing to spot freshwater crayfish and a few eels in the river. On their return to class, students collated and presented their data to answer their research question about the health of the river.
