This March, Rangitoto College was privileged to invite the University of Auckland’s Educate to Liberate team to speak with our ākonga

Dr Melani Anae, Tigilau Ness, and Reverend Alec Toleafoa facilitated an hour talk with our Year 9 cohort and 80 minutes with selected Pasifika students across Years 10 to 13. The original Polynesian Panther trio shared their knowledge and personal experience of the Dawn Raids, a time in Aotearoa’s history when Pasifika were targeted by police for overstaying their visa. They also talked about the formation of the Polynesian Panthers and the 2021 government apology.

This talk was a fantastic opportunity for our Year 9s to consolidate their learnings in Junior Social Science and for our Pasifika students to connect to their shared histories.
