Head of Learning Support

Mrs Shirley Closey

Bachelor of Arts in English and Social Sciences, Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary), and a Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Practice (Digital and Collaborative Learning from Unitec’s The Mind Lab)

My career began in the field of special education within the primary sector, followed by a role with the Ministry of Education’s GSE team, supporting speech-language therapy across Northern Bays schools. After transitioning to secondary education, I have spent the past decade in teaching the English curriculum including Scholarship.  I was appointed to a Head of Department position where for the past six years I have led English, ESOL, Media, and Te Reo Māori learning areas.

Now, as Head of Learning Support at Rangitoto College, I am proud to lead a department that embraces a whole-school, inclusive approach to learning and individual growth. Our work is collaborative. We partner with the senior leadership team, Deans, subject teachers, learning support workers, careers and guidance teams, external experts and agencies, families and whānau to meet the needs of every student. Each student’s diverse needs will be addressed through a personalised programme, with tailored interventions and strategies that are regularly monitored and responsive to their unique strengths and barriers, ensuring academic excellence.

Outside of school, I’m a Life Member of Murrays Bay Sailing Club and have received a Services Award from Yachting New Zealand.
