Every year, on the third Friday of May, the student Pastoral Leadership team hosts Pink Shirt Day at Rangitoto College. This is widely anticipated by the student body for the great events on offer.
Pink Shirt Day originates from Canada, when on the first day of school a Year 9 student was harassed for wearing a pink polo shirt. Two senior students saw the incident and decided to act against it. Teenagers David Shepherd and Travis Prince purchased pink shirts that they distributed to students the next day. Since then, Pink Shirt Day hasn’t just been about wearing pink; it’s a global anti-bullying movement. At our College, we promote anti-bullying activities that allow students to be kind and respectful.
This year, our students had the opportunity to participate in many activities, including face painting, a wall of Kindness, kind messages for teachers, and a bake sale! We were also lucky enough to have Harold the Giraffe pay us a visit. Additionally, food trucks from Double Dutch Fries and Mr Whippy lined up in the courts.
We are proud to have raised over $4000 for the Mental Health Foundation and we are grateful to Double Dutch Fries and Mr Whippy for their contributions. We hope to have made a great impact on our kura and cannot wait to see you all again at Pink Shirt Day 2027!
