On the 27th October, 10 Rangitoto College students joined an incredible 5-day voyage aboard the Spirit of Adventure. Each morning began at 6:30 a.m. with an ocean swim around the ship which was a challenging yet thrilling way to start the day! Some of us faced our fears by climbing the ship’s 31.3-metre mast and setting the sails while in motion, sometimes balancing along the high yards above the ocean.
Throughout the trip, we took part in activities such as hiking on Kawau Island, paddling to shore, sailing, and swimming in the open sea (which included jumping off the yard swing). These experiences highlighted the value of teamwork, as success depended on our ability to collaborate and support one another. We also bonded with students from other schools, including Bream Bay College, Rototuna High School, Raglan Area School, and a homeschool collective.
One of the most meaningful lessons I took away was that life is too short to spend behind a screen. Being out at sea reminded me how rewarding it is to disconnect and live fully in the moment. The voyage was not only an adventure but a journey of personal growth. It was one that strengthened our confidence and left us with memories to last a lifetime.
