This year, Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori fell during Week 9 of Term 3. Although it coincided with our school’s Entrance Exams, our Tū Rangatira students put in immense effort to make the week a success, and their hard work deserves full recognition.
Throughout the week, we ran activities encouraging students to use te reo Māori and try new experiences. Each morning, we also shared a short video featuring a kīanga o te rā (phrase of the day) for students to incorporate into their everyday conversations. If you would like to practice these phrases, they are listed below.
- Ake ake ake – forever and ever
- Kātahi rā – OMG
- Maroke – Dry
- Tūraki wawata – Build ups
- Mauri ora – Acknowledge and wish well onto others
The theme chosen by Te Taura Whiri i Te Reo Māori (the Māori Language Commission) was ‘Ake Ake Ake – A Forever Language.’ To me, this theme serves as a reminder that although Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2026 has passed, our commitment continues year-round. Living in Aotearoa, we should regularly weave the phrases and words we know into our daily lives, rather than confining te reo to a single week.
A heartfelt thank you to all kaimahi (staff), tauira (students), and whānau who supported and took part in the week.
Mā te huruhuru, ka rere te manu. Kaua e whakamā, kia kaha te reo Māori, ake ake ake…
