In late August, Rangitoto Shakespeare Company gave three marvellous performances of The Winter’s Tale, the Bard’s genre-defying story of jealousy, reconciliation, and the famous direction to “exit, pursued by a bear”. The tense, tragic first half of the play and the warmhearted, humorous second half meant a range of opportunities for the actors to show their skills – compelling characters, convincing high emotion, comedic timing, and a strong grasp of Shakespeare’s language.
Year 11 band Silent Alarm beautifully set the scene with live jazz for the suave 1930s first half of the play and rock’n’roll for the 1950s second half. The talented cast worked superbly as an ensemble, with purposeful characters and interactions bringing the world of the play to life. The Tech Crew were a tremendous support, heightening the atmosphere and even wrangling last-minute haze when we needed to disguise that the body of our “bear” suit was actually a sloth.
An enormous congratulations to all involved for pulling off such a wonderful show.
