Rangitoto College’s Chinese Night returned to much fanfare this term, bringing our community together once more to celebrate Chinese culture. The evening was a massive collaboration, featuring 14 different acts and around 140 dedicated students who worked tirelessly on stage and behind the scenes.
We were proud to showcase a beautiful blend of both contemporary and traditional acts. The stage came alive with dynamic modern bands and Chinese hip-hop, alongside old crowd favorites like Diabolo (空竹) and the Lion Dance (舞狮). All three Chinese Traditional Dance groups, Umbrella dance, Sleeve dance, and Fan dance, returned to the stage with new choreographies and stunning flourishes of colour as well. For the first time as well, with much help from the Tech crew, Chinese Night was able to feature a “sparkler” machine, bringing an extra sense of hype to the night.
An event of this scale truly takes a village. The student cohort was brilliantly headed by Henna Hwang and Jiayan (Ella) Liu, and the rest of the Chinese Leadership Committee. This was overseen by their Teacher in Charge, Ellie Yamaguchi, with support from James Searle, Tom Xiao, and Kun Yeop Lee.
After such an amazing night, we hope everyone involved could walk away with fantastic memories, ready to start the grind again for next year!
