From the 17th to the 23rd of August 2025, Rangitoto College proudly celebrated Tongan Language Week under the national theme: “Ko ‘etau lea, ko e fe’unu mahu’inga ia ki he mo’ui ‘a e Tonga – Our language is a vital strand of our Tongan culture.”

The week began with inspiring student speeches from Lopo Nai and Stanley Langaoi at assembly, highlighting the beauty and importance of Tongan language and traditions. Throughout the week, students engaged with cultural activities, including a fun lolly lei-making workshop that brought together students in celebration of community and creativity.

Food was another highlight, with the students from the Pacific tutor class selling delicious chicken, sausages, keke, and raw fish. The stall proved so popular that everything sold out quickly, showing the shared love of Tongan cuisine within our Rangitoto school community.

The celebrations concluded with breathtaking cultural performances from three talented students: Lusia Naufahu, AJ Fakaosi, and Dazia Kolo, who wowed students with traditional Tongan dances that reflected their pride and heritage.

Currently, our Tongan dance group is learning mako which is a unique fusion of lyrical storytelling and rhythmic movement. More than entertainment, makos are a way to honour tradition, show respect, and strengthen community ties which is an embodiment of this year’s theme.
