This year’s Lunar Festival celebration was organised by our talented Chinese and Korean student leadership committees, headed by Haidi Huang, Ryan Li, Claire Yoon and Jihu Lee. It was held during lunchtime on February 14 with support from Mr Park and myself. For the first time, we also welcomed students from our Kāhui Ako to participate and experience the Lunar Festival as well. These were cultural leaders from Primary and Intermediate schools – about 30 of them – and alongside the numerous Rangitoto College students who also turned up, I’m proud to say that everyone involved had a wonderful time.
Students were encouraged to get themselves immersed in the culture via traditional games and food. For some, these were familiar pastimes, and for others this was an excellent opportunity to experience new things. Activities included Asian calligraphy, the “pitch pot” and gonggi games, and ddakji. Our student leadership committees also provided food and drink, such as bulgogi and bubble tea (my favourite). I thank you all for coming to our Lunar Festival celebration, and I can’t wait to see you all next year.
