Our annual Study Skills Evening was designed to help students not only learn how to study, but how to study well. For many young people, study skills are often overlooked – yet when mastered, they can set students up for lifelong success.
Parents and students were invited to hear from keynote speakers and teachers about evidence-based revision strategies. Lucy Irwin provided valuable insights into the new Literacy and Numeracy Co-requisite exam, while Carmen Stoddard shared practical advice on maintaining wellbeing during high-stress periods. The evening was very well attended with around 280 soaking up the knowledge.
Students and whānau also rotated through a series of sessions covering:
- Time management and organisation
- Effective note-taking systems
- Recall and retrieval practice
- Visual learning methods
A specialist workshop was also offered for parents concerned about how English language abilities might affect exam achievement, ensuring support is accessible for all learners.
To continue this support, we have developed a Study Skills website, which includes a summary of the evening’s key points and additional resources, as well as translated resources and a series of engaging videos on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Students. These resources are designed to be practical, accessible, and motivating for students as they prepare for exams.
