BACKNine co-curricular jazz bands and combos took part in the Auckland Jazz Competition at the Birkenhead RSA during the first three weekends of Term 3. Results are as follows:

Our three choirs (Serenata, Cambiata, and The Minuettes) took part in the Auckland Regional Big Sing in Term 2, with Serenata being selected as one of the Top 24 choirs in the country (out of over 280 choirs) to progress to the National Finale. 39 members of Serenata travelled to Christchurch at the end of August with their conductors – Ms Karen Roberts and Mrs Rhianna Maker – and accompanists Mr Edmond Wong, Mrs Kay Robinson, and Mr Jono Sawyer. They were awarded Bronze for their competitive recitals at the Christchurch Town Hall.
On Sunday 21 June, a full Auditorium of supporters was treated to an unforgettable afternoon of music at our annual Concertos and Cookies concert, and it was a pleasure to welcome residents from Knightsbridge Village alongside our wonderful community of family, friends, alumni, and staff. The audience enjoyed complimentary hot drinks and cookies in addition to two hours of spectacular music by over 160 talented students. Our very varied programme featured Concert Band, Wind Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, String Orchestra, and three chamber groups. Crowd favourites included Junsu Na playing Elgar’s Cello Concerto, and Joshua Curham’s solo euphonium playing in Guilmant’s Morceau Symphonique—the full bracket from our Wind Orchestra had everyone’s toes tapping!
Delicious harmonies and high energy filled the air at 6pm on 15 June for A Choral Confection! The auditorium was transformed with stylish red and blue lighting – creating the perfect setting for our 171 singers as they treated a packed audience to 90 minutes of vocal delights and delicacies. Guests were greeted with pottles of red and blue candy before settling in for our annual sugar-coated showcase, hosted by four fantastic MCs and featuring our three choirs, the Year 9 Vocal class, and a selection of solos and small ensemble items. Family and friends laughed along with The Minuettes’ hilarious rendition of What Is This Feeling from Wicked, were moved to tears by Cambiata’s poignant performance of Frobisher Bay and stunned into silence with two solo pieces by soprano Olivia Neethling. A magical evening with a wonderful vibe, that fully satisfied everyone’s musical cravings!
