We are absolutely ecstatic to announce a historic sweep at the Auckland CalcEX Competition this year, where our three participating teams dominated the field and secured an unprecedented First, Second, and Third place!

CalcEX is similar to Mathex, where students need to solve 20 questions within 30 minutes. However, the level of difficulty of the questions is unparalleled. CalcEX is the ultimate challenge for Calculus students across the Auckland region, pitting high school teams against one another in a rapid-fire session of advanced mathematical problem-solving. The atmosphere was electric, with teams working against the clock to solve complex, multi-layered challenges.

CalcEX was first launched in 2017 and lasted until 2020. Due to the pandemic, it was paused for a few years and only was brought back to life this year on 15 October at Mt Albert Grammar School. Normally each school is allowed to send out two teams only, but since it is the first year after Covid-19, we were lucky to be allowed to bring 3 teams. Most of our students are from Year 12, but we also have one Year 9 (Jonathon Xu), one Year 10 (Gordon Peng), one Year 11 (Alston Huang) and two year 13 students (Leo Wang and Joshua Lo) among them. The team members are as follows:

  • Team A:  Zi Lun Jaylen (Jaylen) Ling, YuChuan (Elvis) Xiao, Kyunghoon (Kyle) Tac,  Kyunghyeon (Elijah) Tac
  • Team C: Gwang Ho Kim, Xinlei(Sylvia) Yu, Jonathon Xu, Christopher Rui-Han  (Rui-Han) Ong
  • Team B: Leo Wang, Alston Huang, Shengjia (Gordon) Peng, Joshua Lo

Our students demonstrated absolute mastery in applying theoretical knowledge—tackling everything from complex numbers, rigorous limits and challenging differentiation techniques to intricate integration puzzles—all while maintaining calculated precision. The competition demanded exceptional focus, teamwork, and quick thinking as our teams raced to submit correct answers in a thrilling finish.

This incredible result is a powerful testament to the dedication, intellectual rigor, and collaborative power of our students. Congratulations to all our competitors on this outstanding achievement, proving that our school is the undisputed leader in Calculus excellence!
