This term, Year 11 Sociology students have been examining what makes an effective social action and how to apply this knowledge to their own. One of the highlights of this has been taking part in a day of tree planting.

On Tuesday 27th of May, four Year 11 classes of approximately 100 students ventured out to the Papakura Stream to work alongside Conservation Volunteers New Zealand. Whilst there, students learnt about the importance of improving the water quality to attract and protect the New Zealand longfin eel which are endemic to Aotearoa.

Students also carried out the planting of over 2000 trees around this site. It was a great experience that taught students the importance of protecting our environment and how to positively contribute to the world around them.

From this experience they will continue their activism and apply their knowledge to their own social actions to address a social issue that they are passionate about.
