BACKAuckland Mathex
Mathex is a challenging and fast-paced mathematics contest where schools from across Auckland compete against each other in teams to answer 20 questions as quickly as possible. This year, the representatives from Rangitoto College achieved the school’s best result yet in the Auckland Mathex competition.
Year 9 team B won first place. The winning team members are Tania Luo, Guanhan Li, Shuyan Dai, and William Zhang.
Year 9 team A Yanxing (Robert) Chen, Dylan Sun, Ryan Lau, and Ziqian (Ryan) Wang received 4th place. It is worth mentioning that the last time when Rangitoto College won this Year 9 Mathex Cup was in 1998.
Year 10 teams received 3rd place, our members being Jonathan Xu, Daniel Fang, Jessie Dong and Leon Nathaniel (Leon) Danusantoso) and 5th place with out members being Yiyang (Ethan) Cao, Oscar Li, Wanghou (Eric) Xiao, and Justin Zhang) respectively.
These results did not come easy. They had training twice a week in term 2 and term 3 on Tuesday mornings and during lunchtime on Thursdays. Leaders of Rangitoto Math Competition Club, Gwang (Gwang Ho) Kim, Xinlei (Sylvia) Yu, Jennifer Lan, Ying Yuan (Jack) Zhang, Shengjia (Gordon) Peng, Olivia Jun and Tianyi Lu, provided strong support for the training of these teams throughout the two terms. This is the victory of the whole school.
Junior Mathematics Competition
Students from Rangitoto College also excelled in this year’s New Zealand Junior Math Competition. The competition was divided into two rounds. The first round was done in March and there were 40 multiple choice questions. Only the students who got into the top 15% nationally were invited to the final on May 6th. Here are the results:
Prize winners:
- Yanxing (Robert) Chen – 1st in Year 9
- Guanhan Li – 2nd in Year 9
- Shengjia (Gordon) Peng – 3rd in Year 11
Top 30 nationwide:
- Year 9: Tania Luo, Brady Harris, Ryan Lau, Dylan Sun, and Zihan (Jason) Zhang.
- Year 10: Chenxi (Aria) Han, Daoyuan (Kevin) Chen, Chloe Park, Daoerji Daoerji (Dorji), Francis (Xun) Su, Jonathan Xu, and Jiayi (Melody) Xue.
- Year 11: Nayeon (Joy) Kim, Wenxuan (Larry) Li, Dingding Mao, Cody Darren Mingyu Yang, and Dylan Yin.
- Year 12: Felix Luo, Alston Huang, and Jia Kang.
Distinction:
Besides the prize winners and top 30s, a total of 193 students achieved distinction in JMC, which is the highest number in the history of Rangitoto College. This is a positive sign that our students continue to thrive in Math Competitions.
