From the Commerce Department, we are happy to report that our Head Boy, Joshua Muniu Wang, has received the Silver Medal at the Economics Olympiad International Final Round 2026. The competition was held at the International Olympic Academy in Ancient Olympia, Greece back in August which was a very special location indeed as it is the birthplace of the Olympics!
The Economics Olympiad is a multi-round competition involving assessments across Microeconomics, Macroeconomics as well as Financial Literacy. The last round involved an “Economic Policy Challenge” which required the team to apply economic reasoning beyond a traditional written test setting in a real-world setting.
Joshua was one of only five students selected to represent New Zealand at this year’s International Final. The 2026 Economics Olympiad involved 160,555 students from over 50+ countries worldwide, with just 147 finalists representing 30 delegations progressing to the IFR. Of those finalists, only 20 Silver Medals were awarded, making Joshua’s result a significant international academic achievement.
