Te Kawerau ā Maki are one of the iwi who hold mana whenua in our area. At Rangitoto, we are proud to work alongside Te Kawerau ā Maki to build strong, respectful partnerships that reflect our role as educators in a bicultural Aotearoa. Through this collaboration, iwi knowledge is woven into our teaching, helping both students and staff deepen their understanding of local histories and Māori perspectives.
We are currently engaged in ongoing conversations with iwi representatives, curriculum leaders, and heads of department about how to embed iwi-specific mātauranga into our junior courses. This work strengthens the connection our ākonga (students) have to their learning and continues to grow our bicultural partnership with Māori.
Our commitment also extends to supporting staff in creating a culturally safe, mātauranga-rich curriculum—one where all ākonga can appreciate the significance of the whenua they stand on here at Rangitoto.
This partnership not only enriches learning but also supports the well-being of our wider community. By embracing Māori values and ways of thinking, we move closer to building an inclusive, connected, and truly bicultural Aotearoa.
