Sailing at Rangitoto College

Students can participate in Rangitoto College’s Sailing Academy during Term 1 and Term 4, which align with New Zealand’s sailing seasons. In partnership with Murrays Bay Sailing Club, the college offers a vibrant and supportive programme catering to both beginners and intermediate sailors.

This exciting Academy provides students with the opportunity to develop key sailing skills while building confidence, resilience, teamwork, and water safety awareness — all under the guidance of experienced coaches in a safe and engaging environment. Sailing is a sport enjoyed by thousands of New Zealanders, especially during our beautiful summer months, and this Academy is the perfect introduction or pathway for young sailors.

Rangitoto College has a proud tradition in sailing, with our teams claiming the Secondary Schools Team Sailing National Championship titles in 2019 and 2021.

The programme continues to grow under the outstanding leadership of Scott Leith, who has worked tirelessly to build and strengthen the sailing culture at Rangitoto. His efforts have been supported by passionate whānau, including the Ferrissey and Turner families, who have contributed immensely over the years.

2024 has been a standout year for sailor Joe Leith, who has achieved phenomenal success on both national and international stages. Joe led from the front, securing gold at the College Sport Team and Fleet Regattas, followed by a national title in the 420 class at the New Zealand Open and Youth Championships. His international achievements include a bronze medal in the 420 Open World Championship held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, competing in a fleet of nearly 80 boats. He also won gold in the U17 World Championship in the same event. Demonstrating his versatility, Joe went on to earn bronze in the 470 Olympic Class at the New Zealand Championships.

Joe’s outstanding year was recognised by College Sport Auckland, who named him Young Sportsman of the Year — a well-deserved honour that reflects his commitment, resilience, and pursuit of excellence. We are incredibly proud of Joe and excited to see what the future holds for him.
