Kia ora Rangitoto College Parents,

Transition to High School

Kia ora Rangitoto whānau, and a very warm welcome to the parents and caregivers of our new Year 9 students. As we cross the five-week mark of Term 1, the reality of high school life is truly setting in. We know that the leap to college is a massive milestone; for some students, this transition has been seamless, while for others, navigating a larger campus, new social dynamics, and a step up in academic expectations can feel a bit overwhelming. Please know that this mixed bag of emotions is completely normal. Change brings both excitement and uncertainty, and the Rangitoto College Counselling Team wants to reassure you that we are right here to support your family through it.

While high school brings a wonderful new level of independence, our young people still need steady scaffolding at home to truly thrive. You can help them build resilience by keeping the lines of communication open, checking in regularly with casual, pressure-free questions about their day and their friends. It is also incredibly helpful to guide them in balancing their new academic workload while fiercely protecting their time for rest, hobbies, and family. Gently nudging them toward school clubs, sports, or cultural groups can foster shared interests and easy friendships, while prioritizing the basics—like a good night’s sleep, healthy food, and physical activity—will lay the absolute foundation for their emotional well-being. Above all, be patient. Reassure them that finding their groove takes time and that it is always okay to ask for help.

To further support you in guiding your child through these changes, Rangitoto College provides free access to SchoolTV, which is an exceptional online platform packed with expert, bite-sized advice on the modern challenges young people face. For our new families in particular, we highly recommend their special report on the Transition to High School and the suggested resources available in the School Transitions area. It is full of practical, relevant strategies designed specifically for the phase you are navigating right now, and you can easily access it via the school website, the parent portal, or the Rangitoto app. Please keep in mind that reference to Year 7 by Dr Michael Carr-Gregg AO is the Australian year 7, which is year 9 here in Aotearoa.

If you find that your child needs a little extra support beyond home, our Counselling Department is ready to step in. We are a team of five full-time counsellors, all proudly registered with the New Zealand Association of Counsellors, dedicated to providing a confidential, judgement-free space for students to unpack whatever is on their minds. Students can easily book an appointment directly with us at school, but because you know your child better than anyone, we warmly welcome you to reach out if you notice they are struggling to find their footing. Thank you for partnering with us to support your child’s well-being; we look forward to a fantastic year ahead.

Warm regards,

The Rangitoto College Counselling Team
