Youth Peace Week is a national event in Aotearoa, coordinated by the Peace Foundation, which aligns with the commemorations of the August Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. It was created to promote peace around the world, reflect on the human costs of war, and especially raise awareness against the dangers posed by atomic and nuclear weapons.

This year is the 80th anniversary of the bombing, making it a crucial time for all of us to remember the terrible aftereffects of the bombs. This serves as a reminder to all, especially the youth, on how to contribute to a more peaceful world.

To celebrate Youth Peace Week at Rangitoto College, we hosted lunchtime events throughout the week of August 4th, proudly led and supported by our incredible student participants.

On Monday, we ran paper plate painting. We took pictures with our sakura flower-themed photo frame on Tuesday. On Wednesday, there was a talk from Hiroshima survivors, Aki and Takako, who also gave a talk to Year 13 History students. There were peace collages on Thursday, a collaboration with Dr. Bronwyn Wood and her PHD student, Ben from Victoria University, along with paper crane folding. Finally, a massive 30-question Kahoot was held on Friday.
