Our Service and Spirit Leadership Team were excited to host our first-ever Ice Bucket Challenge. The challenge raises funds and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) New Zealand. MND is a cruel and rapidly progressing illness that affects people from all walks of life. Those diagnosed know exactly how their life will end – trapped in a body that no longer functions, unable to move, speak, and eventually, breathe.
New Zealand has one of the highest rates of MND in the world, with around 400 people living with the condition at any given time. On average, two people die each week and three more receive a diagnosis.
At our event, 12 students fundraised independently and were dunked during lunchtime. They were joined by four teachers: Matua Ke’arn, Mrs Gale, Mrs Van de Water, and Mr Searle, who received the most votes from our student body. Thank you to all the students and teachers who were involved.
In total, we raised $2,503.90 – a fantastic effort! All funds go directly to Motor Neurone Disease New Zealand, the only charity dedicated to improving quality of life, funding research, and campaigning for those affected by MND in Aotearoa.
It’s not too late to donate if you would like to support Kiwi’s diagnosed with this horrible disease.
