Rangitoto College has officially launched its first-ever wrestling program, significantly expanding the sports offerings available to students. The initiative, which began as a single taster session, quickly gained momentum due to enthusiastic student interest and the timely arrival of wrestling training mats, generously loaned by Wrestling NZ.

At the heart of the programme is former student and nationally recognised wrestler Stefan Kumerich, who brings world-class experience and passion to his new role as coach. His leadership has been instrumental in laying the foundation for what the school hopes will become a thriving and long-term addition to its sporting culture.

We’ve already entered a couple of tournaments—one with no prior training, and the next after the group were fortunate enough to train at the world-renowned City Kickboxing (CKB) gym. Our competitors came away with a medal, a number of impressive wins, invaluable experience, and plenty of key learnings.

Training sessions are now held every Friday afternoon at 4.30pm at school for 90 minutes, offering students a chance to develop skills in a sport that is both physically demanding and mentally engaging.

Looking ahead, the team has several key events on the calendar – NZ Secondary Schools Nationals (29 August), and the Tauranga Open (14 September)

With momentum building, Rangitoto College is excited to grow its wrestling community and welcomes any students interested in joining the journey.
