Swimming remains one of Rangitoto College’s most successful sports, and the 2025 season has already seen outstanding performances across three major competitions. With a squad of 40–50 students, our swimmers continue to impress with their skill, commitment, and team spirit.
Despite swimming being an individual sport, the Rangitoto team brings strong unity and energy to every event. Representing their local clubs outside of school, these athletes dedicate countless hours to training—and it shows when they race in Rangitoto colours.
At the Champ of Champs, our team brought home 30 medals (13 gold, 8 silver, 9 bronze), followed by another 24 medals at the Auckland Secondary Schools Individual Championships (8 gold, 10 silver, 6 bronze). Our relay teams also delivered impressive results.
Among our top performers is Monique Wieruszowski, a national breaststroke star. She currently holds the NZ title and record in the 50m breaststroke (30.38s) and dominated the 2025 NZ Championships with 11 medals, including:
- National titles in the 50m, 100m, and 200m breaststroke
- Golds in women’s relays and 17–18 age group events
- Silver and bronze in mixed relay, individual medley, and freestyle
Monique will represent New Zealand at the Junior World Championships in Romania this August, with goals set on the 2026 Commonwealth Games and 2028 LA Olympics.
Another standout performer is Grayson Coulter, who continues to rewrite the record books for 13-year-old boys. At the 2025 NZ Open Championships, Grayson:
- Broke his own NZ 200m IM record (2:11.86), placing 10th overall in Open Men’s
- Set 1:53.67 in the 200m freestyle—the first 13-year-old Kiwi ever under 2 minutes
- Claimed silver in the 4x200m men’s relay and bronze in the mixed 4x100m
He also set two more NZ age group records at the Champ of Champs in the 50m freestyle and butterfly.
From sprints to distance events, Rangitoto swimmers continue to deliver podium results and showcase the values of skill, dedication, and sportsmanship. Next up, the team is preparing for the NZ Secondary Schools Championships in Hamilton, 24–27 July. We’re excited to be sending a strong squad and can’t wait to see them on the national stage.
As we build on our swimming legacy and continue expanding Rangitoto’s sporting success, the future’s looking bright. We’re so proud of our swimmers and eager to see what they achieve next.
