Students from Rangitoto College have done amazingly well in various Math Olympiads so far this year. 

Inter-School Math Olympiad

In the Inter-School Math Olympiad, our students won 36 medals in total, which is one third of the total number of medals nationwide. 

  • 18 Bronze medals won by Alan Li, Andrew Xue, Cody Yang, Eric Ni, Gavin Jang, Hugo Tan, Jack (Ying Yuan) Zhang, Jessie Dong, Jiming Yang, Julian Yoon, Ken Li, Oscar Li, Patrick Nguyen, Phoenix McClean, Yiqing Liu, Youran (Yolanda) Zhang, Yuanyuan Zheng and Zihao Zhou.
  • 13 Silver medals won by Dingding Mao, Emily Chen, Ethan Wang, Felix Luo, Gordon Peng, Haoting Lu, Helen Chen, Jaylen Ling, Jennifer Lan, Jo-Ann Cai, Jonathan Xu, Rick Tang and Selina Ni.
  • 5 Gold medals won by Leo Wang, Keisuke Ohta, Elijah Tac, Eric Xiao and Kyle Tac.

It is worth mentioning that Eric Xiao won the1st place in the Junior division and Kyle Tac won the 1st place in the Senior division. 

Auckland Math Olympiad

Students from our school did amazingly well in the Auckland Math Olympiad held in the University of Auckland in May.

Junior Division (Year 9 – 11):

  • Eric Xiao (Year 9) – 9th place
  • Gordon Peng (Year 10) – 5th place
  • Jonathan Xu (Year 9) – 1st place 

Senior Division (Year 12 – 13)

  • Gwang Ho Kim (Year 12) – 8th place
  • Edward Xiao (Year 13) – 3rd place (-)
  • Leo Wang (Year 13) – 3rd place (-)

This is the best results our students achieved in recent years in AMO!

International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)

Rangitoto student Edward made it into the New Zealand IMO team after finishing NZMO round 1 and 2, NZMO training camp, NZIMO training squad, British Maths Olympiad round 1 and 2, Asian Pacific Maths Olympiad, Australian Maths Olympiad, etc. Edward is the first Rangitoto College student who has made it into the IMO team. He will represent NZ to participate in the 66th IMO, which will be held between July 10th and 20th of 2025 in Australia on the Sunshine Coast. We wish him good luck.
