Student Stories

Our international students all have different reasons for choosing New Zealand and when they leave they have some amazing stories to tell. Here are some of the things they say about their experiences at Rangitoto College, living on the North Shore of Auckland, and travelling around New Zealand.

In my IB (International Baccalaureate) class, I feel I have many more chances to give my opinion and discuss topics with the teachers and students. As IB is more about self-management, I feel I am becoming a more independent critical thinker, which I think will be really helpful for me when I get to university.

In my opinion, the most different and unusual thing about IB is that it not only consists of 6 subjects, but also has 3 other main parts which are CAS (Creativity, Action, Service), TOK (Theory of knowledge) and EE (Extend Essay). CAS requires us to take at least one on-going sport and different services, such as volunteering. I highly recommend IB to those students who are thinking about going to university overseas.

Hello, I am a Korean international student, Eunsol. I’ve studied in New Zealand for five years and my dream is to become a foreign diplomat in the future to represent my country. Lots of valuable experiences at Rangitoto College helped me to find my dream. I love how I can choose what subjects to study at school and the school has provided me with lots of opportunities to participate in many different extracurricular activities such as Amnesty international, Rangitoto College UNICEF, and the Young Enterprise scheme. I believed I gained valuable experiences at Rangi that money can't buy. The international department helped me to settled down in the new environment at the school and homestay was an excellent choice to experience Kiwi culture. I hope more students can experience school life at Rangitoto College because choosing Rangitoto College was the best decision that I made in my life.

Hello, my name is Alexander Rivenski and I am 16 years old. I have lived in New Zealand for 8 years and I come from West Kalimantan, Indonesia. In New Zealand I amin grade 11 and I am studying at Rangitoto College. I have been going to school in New Zealand for almost 3 years and I plan to finish high school here. At Rangitoto I have had the opportunity to learn some interesting subjects such as Accounting, Economics, and Business, as well as some academic subjects such as Math, English and Science.

In New Zealand, the classes are designed to help students develop their talents and learn the skills required for admission to university. We have to motivate ourselves, work in collaboration with other students, contribute to discussions in the classroom and find creative ways to solve problems or issues. In the future I plan to be a company manager and Rangitoto College has prepared me well with the experiences that I needed to become a good manager.

Thank you

I had the chance to go to New Zealand for one month, where I could study in a great school, Rangitoto. During my trip, I have got to know people from so many different places and got involved in many activities. I chose this destination for playing rugby, because in New Zealand it's the most popular sport so Rangitoto had a very good team. The team was incredible,we won lots of matches and succeded in winning the tournament against Northcote at the end. It was awesome to play with the Kiwis and it was the best experience of my life, I will never forget it.

I arrived end of January and felt really good from the first day on. My host family are really nice. We have a really good relationship and have so much fun together. I couldn’t have a better family. On the weekends I do lots of different activities with my friends. For example going to Rangitoto island, playing pool, bowling and so much more. At school the teachers are really nice and friendly.  They always try to help you whenever they can.

Also my parents from Austria visited me in the holidays and we traveled through the whole country for 3 weeks. All in all it was one of the best decisions in my life. I have enjoyed every single day here and made friends from all over the world. I would highly recommend this to anyone, because this is an experience of my lifetime and one that will always be remembered.

Living as a Kiwi is an experience that I won't ever forget and I'll never EVER regret it. If I had the chance to live it all over again I'd do it in a heartbeat. I've never seen such a beautiful country before, not only for its landscapes but also for the amazing friends and family I've met; I'll have them forever in my heart.

Coming to New Zealand was one of the best things I have ever done.  As an international student I made lots of new friends from all over the world and it has been a really good experience. I'm sure I'm going to miss this country a lot, it is so safe and is so beautiful, there are lots of beautiful beaches and some other really cool landscapes.

The school is really big, you will probably get lost in the first few days but you will get used to it. Here, contrary to Brazil, you have many subject options and it's really cool to be able to try some different ones. I'm really enjoying my time here and I'm sure I'm going to miss it when I go back to Brazil.

I have been at Rangitoto College since the beginning of this year. I study with local students and other international students. Kiwi students are very friendly and if I have a question to ask them, they always help me. I always try to speak English with my friends because it helps me improve my English quickly. English is my second language so it is sometimes difficult in class but the teachers always help me. Rangitoto has lots of activities after school. I always play basketball with my friends and I use English to communicate with my team mates. I am having a great experience at Rangitoto college.

I chose to study English, French, Geography, Tourism and Physical Educaiton (PE). PE was my favourite because we did a lot of different activities like volleyball, football, rugby and other little fun games. Every double period we went to the Millennium for swimming, kayaking, waterpolo and rockclimbing. It was so much fun to improve my skills! PE is even more fun when you have a great class like I had. I even got an award for effort and involvement, which will look good in any applications for the future.

But the best thing of my entire year was the Ball. I had so much fun!

I think that becoming an exchange student was the best decision of my life. I'm having a really good time, I've learned many things and I've met many awesome people from all around the world. Before coming to New Zealand I was a little bit scared about my new family and that I would not understand or I would not have friends. Now I know that my worries were totally unnecessary and I'm enjoying every moment here in New Zealand.

For me school in New Zealand is completely different - for example the first period starts at 8:45 and in Slovakia it's at 8:00. In my Slovakian school we take about 10 subjects (sometimes more) and you can choose only 2 subjects you want to focus on. Here at Rangi you can choose 5 subjects and you have to take English.

So if you are thinking about going to study  somewhere abroad just stop thinking and go!   You will find so many friends, have an absolutely unforgettable time and of course you will improve your English.  If I had to choose again to come here or to stay in Slovakia, my decision would be the same.

Nakoniec boli všetky tieto obavy úplne zbytočné a môj pobyt si naplno užívam. Takže, ak stále rozmýšľaš, či máš ísť študovať do zahraničia, proste neváhaj a choď! Nájdeš si naozaj veľa kamarátov, zažiješ veľa nezabudnuteľných zážitkov a rozhodne si zlepšíš angličtinu.
