Student Stories

Our international students all have different reasons for choosing New Zealand and when they leave they have some amazing stories to tell. Here are some of the things they say about their experiences at Rangitoto College, living on the North Shore of Auckland, and travelling around New Zealand.

Yu-Bing (Rowena) Goh - Singapore

Hello, my name is Yu-Bing and I am an international student from Singapore. I have been here since 2015 and I'm really enjoying my stay in New Zealand.

Since joining Rangitoto College in 2016, the school has had a big impact on me and I strive to do my best in every subject and participate in as many activities as possible. Teachers at Rangitoto College are extremely approachable and friendly. The class that I like most is junior social science, which is taught by Mrs. Grey and she has been teaching me for 2 years. She is amazing as she is very good at teaching and answers all our questions patiently. Mrs. Grey motivates me to have more understanding about history and inspires me to work harder.

There are a wide variety of activities you can join at Rangitoto College. I took an interest in dance and went for many dance and musical auditions. These opportunities have built my self-confidence and helped me overcome stage fright. There are many sports activities that are available. I took part in badminton, archery and taekwondo, which were exciting new experiences for me. There is also voluntary work to sign up for at school which was good experience for me, enabling me to know friends from different countries.

Rangitoto College has given me so many fond memories and I look forward to another interesting school year.

Rangitoto College

Quoc Anh Nguyen - Vietnam

On the 23rd January, 2016, I came to New Zealand for the first time ever. Two years have gone by and I had a lot of good memories from Rangitoto College. When I came to the school on the first day, I was amazed by how nice people are here in New Zealand and in the school. All of my teachers were super nice and they spent lots of time with me. My classmates were super friendly. They made me feel welcome and offered to help me whenever I faced challenges. Soon, I became a part of the class.

In New Zealand, I only have to pick six subjects, compared to 13 compulsory subjects in Vietnam. This makes a huge difference between the two education systems and I enjoyed picking subjects that will make a major impact on my career later on like Accounting, Construction, and Generic Computing. My favourite class is probably Generic Computing by Mrs. Hanley. She is the best teacher I’ve ever had!

Moreover, the school has a wide range of clubs and activities. I loved to participate in Chinese Night or Amnesty International as I met lots of new friends and learned new skills and unknown cultures. It has been an amazing journey and I will never forget my time here in New Zealand and Rangitoto College.

Ngày 23 tháng 1 năm 2016, tôi đặt chân đến New Zealand lần đầu tiên.

Leonardo Castellini - Italy

I have been here for 3 months and even though it's not that long, I have really enjoyed this experience. Since the beginning I felt welcome at the college, where the teachers made me feel more involved in lessons, and at home thanks to my host-family, who have been really nice to me.

Different to the Italian structure of school, where you have to study general subjects, here I had the opportunity to choose, join and learn more about other interesting classes. Through this experience, I have been able to focus and widen my view about what I'd like to do when I'll leave school.

Thanks to Rangitoto College I've met students from all over the world and I could even play rugby with the college's team, improving my skills, keeping fit and making new friends. It has been really amazing for me to play here, where the level of this sport is the highest worldwide.

Koki Okabe - Japan

Hello, I’m Koki from Tokyo, Japan. I’ve been living in New Zealand for almost two years. I joined an English school called Unique for the first six months, since my English was not good enough to enter the college. Unique had a lot of students from a variety of countries. Because I was in Japan, where I spent most of my time with Japanese people, it was surprising for me to be surrounded by the people who have completely different cultural backgrounds and thoughts. At that time, since my English was poor, I couldn’t really communicate with these people. Being unable to speak something I wanted to say was very frustrating for me, even now. From what I experienced, I think this sort of frustration is a positive sign for all of you in terms of learning English, because it actually makes you motivated to do English studies as I experienced.

At the moment, I have some English speaking local friends at Rangitoto College. In my second year at a PE camp, I met one person, Jason, and we became really good friends. He is the one person I have related with most at Rangi and I think he has contributed a lot to enjoying life even more at the school. He gave me opportunities to interact with people at school by introducing me to his friends which, I believe, was critical for me to actually feel a sense of fulfillment at school. I’m so grateful for the fact that he helped me with such a thing. However, if I think back, I wouldn't feel comfortable here if not for these next two things. One of the things is my host family. They’ve always been nice to me and treated me as one of their own family members. In addition to that, they taught me a lot of things other than English, such as music interests, kiwi slang and lots of funny and interesting things that I could talk about in other social environments. These things may sound like nothing to some people but from my point of view, it’s really important for people from other countries to know local cultural aspects as to show respect to the country, and understanding these will help you make connections with people in the country.

Even though my English was poor, the things that I’ve learnt from them is one of the reasons why I could get closer to people here in New Zealand. Another thing, which I think is really important is the effort I made during my time in New Zealand. When I arrived in New Zealand, I decided to put more effort into meeting and conversing with people local to New Zealand and not just take the easy route and stick with only Japanese speaking people. The reason why I did this is that I wanted to pursue English studies and the cultural aspects in here. The effort I made created a big difference in terms of my approach to my learning and also my social skills. This was truly difficult for me as I spent most of my life in Japan and I also remember that I used to feel isolated in New Zealand. I can sincerely say that the things I mentioned above, wouldn’t have happened without this effort. Instead of hanging out with things that are normal and comfortable for me, I tried to learn from my host family. Lastly, based on what I experienced in here, I recommend Rangitoto College for those of you who have a strong passion to learn English and especially New Zealand culture.

Bea MacDonald - Argentina

13 (2013)

What can I say about my exchange in New Zealand? I returned to my country, Argentina, more than 3 years ago and I still cannot find the words to describe how amazing the experience was. A new country, a new family, a new school and a completely different culture. All this helped me to be the person who I am today.

At Rangitoto I had the opportunity to choose the subjects I wanted to study. So I chose: photography, art, English, cooking and my last option was tourism. I chose it without knowing how much I would like it! And thanks to that, I decided that I wanted to study tourism and travel. I took the trip to the South Island: extraordinary! After New Zealand I went to Spain for a year, then I returned to Argentina and I am studying tourism.

I fell in love with New Zealand. With the way of life, the people, the culture and its nature. And it is in my plans to return in the not too distant future. What recommendation would I give to someone who is thinking about going on an exchange? Just do it. Or someone who is doing an exchange and is reading this? Enjoy. Enjoy every detail. Take some time to sit on the beach and watch the sunset. Have fun. Make new friends. Go out and fill yourself with new experiences. Do not be afraid to try new food or do new things. Because an exchange is lived only once. And what people do not know is that, it's not an exchange in your life. But it's a life in an exchange.

Hyelim (Abigail) Lee - Korea

I have been studying in NZ for 2 years and this year at Rangi was the most miraculous year that I have ever experienced. Rangitoto College has allowed me to look at the world in many different ways. This year, I got into Auckland UN Youth (United Nations), which I wouldn’t have known about if I hadn’t been at Rangi. Through UN Youth, I made lots of friends and learnt numerous things.

I love how at Rangi, you can choose the subjects that you want to take. For next year, I have chosen DVC, Performance Music and French. My favourite teacher, Mr O’Grady teaches my French class. He made French interesting and I love the jokes that he makes (they’re quite lame but I love them!)  I had three types of music tuition this year and that improved my musical skills significantly compared to last year. I have auditioned for and been accepted into two music groups for next year. The thing that I like about sport groups at Rangi is that they have social groups for sports. Social sports groups are for the people who just purely enjoys the sports and to interact with people so there isn’t any pressure on any of members in the group.

My favourites!!!! Let me tell you about my homestay family! We do all sorts of family things most of the weekends. I feel included in my homestay family and I feel so lucky to be accepted as a part of their family. One of my homestay sisters, Breana helps me with my school work and we always do everything together. It’s cool to live with my best friend, Breana also with Lynley, Rodney, Callum and Sienna.I love my homestay family so much!

“My learning, my responsibility.” This is the quote that I learnt in Rangi and this quote has pushed me a lot whenever I was having a hard time with tests and exams. Rangitoto College is the most marvellous school to be at in New Zealand.

Hi, my name is Billie. I have been living here in New Zealand for 3 years and I studied at Rangitoto College for 2 years. Rangitoto College will always have a special place in my heart because the school has made a big impact on me. The education system, the students, the teachers and the environment has helped me become the person that I am now. When I moved to New Zealand, I had 5 high schools to choose from but I chose Rangitoto College because I had a good feeling about it and they had a reputation for providing quality education. I would say that I have made the best decision because everyone was keen to lend a helping hand whatever the reason was. Studying at this school is great because you’re able to choose the subject that you’re good at and the teachers will give you endless support with every assessment that you have in their subject. This has made an big impact as it improved the way I study and it is good practice if you are planning to study at university here in NZ. It was my privilege to be a Youth Leader of Ignite Christian Group and became a Teacher Aid for year 9 & 10 English classes, which helped me build my confidence with meeting other people and being part of the school community. Meeting people and having friends all over the world is the best thing too as this can help you build long lasting friendships. I’m proud to be a graduate of Rangitoto College! Thank you so much for making my last few years of high school worth remembering! :)

Wanting to experience a new adventure, I decided to fly to Auckland. However, because I was still 15 at that time, my high school studies are yet to be completed. I chose Rangitoto College after consulting from local Aucklanders I knew at that time, and was utterly convinced to enrol when I heard them say that “It’s the best place to be!’’

I joined Rangi with a small amount of English skills. I had a lot of struggles understanding everything but the people around me were nice and had help me in all the different things I found hard. I managed to put through 3 years of studies and graduated with an improved and satisfactory level of English. It felt great being able to communicate in English with native speakers and learning diverse cultures and backgrounds.

After my studies at Rangi I still did not want to leave NZ so I went to University (AUT) to pursue 3 more years of studies. I’m grateful for all the experience I had in NZ. NZ is a place of stunning nature with wonderful people which brings so much adventure to one’s life. My time in NZ was certainly the best times of my life! Now that I spent great 11 years of my life in NZ, the next step was to bring back my experience and skills to my homeland and make use of it to help people find passion in learning the English language. As a result, my husband and I moved to Japan and started our own English school.

To Rangitoto college, where my new adventures began, thank you very much for helping me. I wouldn’t be able to be where I am now without you.

Dongmin (Jason) Seo - Korea

Hello, everyone. My name is Jason. I have stayed in New Zealand for more than 3 years. During this time I became quite fluent in English and good at Science. I came to New Zealand to improve my English. Rangitoto College has helped me in many ways. Without Rangitoto College I would not have excelled as much as I have in the subjects I have taken which include English, Math, Science and Social science. The school has also helped to improve my saxophone skills. There are so many different activities that I can’t even count them all. I love them. If you are looking for a great school to enrol in, choose Rangitoto College because this school is the best in the world. There are many subjects and co-curricular activities to choose from and the teachers are top class. I highly recommend Rangitoto College.

My goal for the future is to be accepted at the Korea Aerospace University. I would like to create modern technology like robots. My parents also support me in my decision. In order to achieve my goal, I have to study with determination. I have to excel at English and Math and also, I personally want to be someone who is fluent in English. Rangitoto College has helped me become better at English and Math. I was bad at English when I came to New Zealand, but now, I can read, write and speak in English with confidence. With further study I will continue to improve and I will be closer to achieving my goal. I know I will graduate from Korea Aerospace University. Rangitoto College is helping me get closer to my dream.

I think Rangitoto College is an amazing school in New Zealand. I like studying science because in science classes you learn lots of interesting facts about things such as cells or plants. My favourite subject in science is chemistry because it is fun to learn and my science teacher makes it exciting. Sometimes at school, we have practical experiments like shooting a rocket or dissecting a cow’s eye. The cow’s eye dissection was quite scary and disgusting but it was also fascinating and engaging. Experiments became a highlight of my day. My Science class teacher is Mr. Lloyd and he is a very entertaining teacher that has a funny moustache. He is a good teacher and I have learnt so much from him. He helps me when I am stuck on a difficult question. He is a great teacher who helps students very well. My second favourite class is Math as I am surrounded by geniuses. I am in an extension class so I am doing Math at a higher level. My Math teacher’s name is Mrs. McLeay and I think she is a wonderful teacher. She teaches through math games which help with my understanding. My test scores have been proof that my math skills have been improving. Next, my English classes are fantastic. My English teacher is Mr. Shadbolt and he teaches very well and his lessons are enjoyable. When I have a question about English, he would always be there to help. It has been good to study at Rangitoto College because the relaxed way of teaching makes it easy to learn.

I have made lots of friends from different countries. There is Ryan. He is from China but he was born in New Zealand, so he is bad at Chinese. He helps me with lots of stuff and we went to the same intermediate so we’re very good friends. Secondly, there is a Kiwi friend. His name is Clarke. We also went to the same intermediate. He is a mischievous boy and we had fun times together. Lastly, there is a Japanese friend. His name is Kai and we worked together. But he is a little bit bad at English, so I helped him when he has questions. I think when I go back to my country I will miss them!! I promised them that I will come back to New Zealand to visit them all.

Sebastián Benavides - CHILE

Being at Rangitoto College was one of the experiences that I will never forget. I had the opportunity to meet people from all countries! Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, New Zealand and many more.

I had a very good time with my friends, we did many tours  and alot of travel including a trip to the Coromandel with 10 of my friends. I stayed at Rangitoto College for 2 months and I liked alot of the subjects i chose; engineering, physical education and tourism were my favourites.
