Whether you are interested in learning about Maori culture, visiting one of the many beaches, relaxing in the natural thermal hot pools or jumping off the Sky Tower, Auckland has something for everyone.
Auckland is surrounded by some amazing beaches and there are lots of beautiful places to relax with friends. Mairangi Bay and Browns Bay are the closest beaches to Rangitoto College. Students particularly like Browns Bay because of the shops, cafes and large park next to the beach.The east coast beaches near the school have white sand and small waves, making them perfect for swimming, stand up paddle boarding and kayaking.
The Sky Tower
Auckland’s Sky Tower is 328 metres tall and has amazing views of Auckland. If you are brave, you can walk on the glass floor and look down to the little cars below you. If you are really brave, you can do the sky jump!
Auckland’s aquarium is a great place to see over 80 different species, including penguins, sharks and stingrays. You can also see what life was like for some of the first explorers in Antarctica!
Visit Rainbow’s End for a fun day out with friends. It is New Zealand's only theme park and has some great rides, including a roller coaster, log flume and much more!
Waiwera Hot Pools
Waiwera Hot Pools are approximately 25 minutes from Rangitoto College. Relax in the natural thermal waters, play on the waterslides or watch a movie in the Movie Pool.
See the kiwis, giraffes, lions, birds and other amazing animals at the Auckland Zoo. Near the Zoo there is a lovely park called Western Springs, where you can feed the ducks.
The Auckland War Memorial Museum has excellent exhibitions and interactive displays. You can see a Maori show with traditional singing and dancing and learn more about New Zealand history.
Skiing and Snowboarding
You don’t need a mountain to practice skiing or snowboarding! Visit Snowplanet - Auckland's indoor snow park in Silverdale, only 20 minutes north of Rangitoto College.
Are you interested in visiting a kiwi farmyard and seeing sheep, cows and horses? There are a couple of places in Auckland you can visit which are about 45min from the city centre.
Visit the island you can see from school! It takes about ten minutes to get to Rangitoto Island from downtown Auckland by ferry and about one hour to walk to the top. Nobody lives on Rangitoto Island because it is a nature reserve. Take your lunch and have a picnic at the top of the volcano!
Climb up Mt Eden for excellent views of the city. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the top and it is a great place for a picnic.
Hire a bike and cycle through the forest on over 100km of purpose-built track.

You can join a sailing club and learn how to sail an optimist sailing boat.
Stand Up Paddle Boarding
Stand up paddle boards (SUPs) are a fun way to spend time on the water. You stand on a large steady board and paddle yourself around with an oar. You can rent SUPs from Stand Up Takapuna and have a lesson on Takapuna Beach.
Surfing is popular with our male and female students and we can organise day trips as well as some great surf camps and trips during the year.
Students over 16 can hire kayaks at Ferg's Kayaks in Okahu Bay, which is close to Mission Bay. Lessons are also available.
You can hire indoor and outdoor courts in Albany, not far from school.
North Harbour Table Tennis Association - located in Northcote. Join the club or casual hire available.
Harbour Badminton have a social after-school badminton session for teenagers, and you can also hire courts.
Kick boxing is a great way to keep fit, and there are classes close to school in Browns Bay.
Indoor Sports – YMCA
At the YMCA North Shore there is a variety of sports teams that you can either join or play with a group of friends and hire the facilities. These include basketball, netball, indoor soccer, volleyball, soccer, badminton and lots more. Our indoor stadium means we can offer them all year round! You can book courts on a casual basis, just contact for more details.
Are you brave enough to try sky diving? Sky Dive Auckland is located about 40 min north of Auckland City Centre. Make sure you have your parent’s written permission first!
If you like dancing, there are several dance studios on the North Shore that offer fun dance classes. There are lots of different styles to choose from, including hip-hop, ballroom, latin and ballet!
You can get a ferry to beautiful islands not far from Auckland City, such as Rangitoto (where we get our name), Tiritiri Matangi (a bird sanctuary) and Waiheke Island (lovely beaches and villages).
Kite surfing is similar to windsurfing but you use a kite instead of a sail. Wing and Waves offer kite surfing lessons, and they are based in Bayswater on Auckland's North Shore.
There are a few places where you can go horse riding around Auckland. They are all between 20-45min away from Auckland city.
New Zealand is one of the cheapest countries in the world to play golf, with the average cost of a round being $25. With over 380 golf courses in New Zealand, many in beautiful locations overlooking the ocean, New Zealand has a lot to offer golf enthusiasts.
Shopping in Auckland
Students enjoy shopping at Browns Bay next to the beach and at Albany Westfield Shopping Centre, which is one of the newest and largest shopping malls in New Zealand. Downtown Auckland has an extensive selection of international and local shops and students enjoy the many night markets and weekend markets nearby.
Rangitoto College is located only a short distance from some beautiful beaches, Browns Bay and Mairangi Bay. Students enjoy speding time in the cafes, restaurants and shops next to the park and beach.
