International Baccalaureate

Rangitoto College is a proud part of an ever growing global community of secondary schools offering the International Baccalaureate in 144 different countries. The IB is a diploma programme which is recognised worldwide and has gained a reputation for its rigorous external assessment and is recognised and respected by universities worldwide. It is a broad, balanced and academically challenging educational programme, which prepares students for success at university and in life beyond.

The International Baccalaureate is a two year programme which can be taken as an alternative to NCEA in Years 12 and 13. The Diploma is awarded as a total qualification and cannot be broken up. Students undertake Level 1 NCEA in Year 11 before being offered the choice to either continue with NCEA in Years 12 and 13 or to begin the two-year International Baccalaureate Diploma programme in Year 12.

Course Overview

The IB Diploma Programme is designed to be academically challenging and holistically balanced and consists of six subject areas including:

  • native language
  • acquired language
  • social sciences
  • experimental sciences
  • mathematics
  • arts

In addition to their six chosen subjects, students are challenged to broaden their educational experience through community service, self-directed research (in the form of a 4000-word extended essay) and critical examination in the Theory of Knowledge.

National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA)

NCEA is a flexible and internationally well-recognised qualification, consisting of both internal assessments and external assessments to cater for different learning styles. Students sitting NCEA are assessed throughout the year with assignments, practical assessments, presentations, examinations and project work.

It is possible to gain NCEA in two years, however, usually students gain credits in their last three years of school (Years 11, 12 and 13). All students who are at Rangitoto College from February to December (1 full academic year) will be required to sit NCEA exams at the end of the year. The NCEA exam fees ($400) are already included in the tuition fee and are paid by the school.

Download the free NCEA app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store, or download the PDF NCEA Guide. If you've already registered for NCEA, you can check your NCEA credits online.

NCEA Subjects

At Rangitoto College, students can choose many of the subjects they study and their choices will depend on their goals. We always encourage them to choose subjects they are interested in and subjects that are a prerequisite for a specific university degree. If possible, students should choose their subjects before arriving in New Zealand.
