We aim to meet the foreign language/second language needs of students in our community by providing language learning opportunities that reflect our place in a modern New Zealand society.
Related Activities Outside the Classroom Situation
Study trips and exchanges
Study tours and/or sister school exchanges are organised within the department every year for at least one of our foreign languages. Maori - Marae visits. Native speakers
Regular exposure to language assistants and students on exchange visits. Interaction from time to time with visiting sports people, dignitaries, teachers and cultural groups. Festivals
A National Day or Language Week is celebrated for each language. International Day is a major feature of the Rangitoto Arts Festival week held every two years.
Lunchtime groups
Music/videos/food relevant to the target language.
Language Immersion Camp
An annual feature for senior students in at least one foreign language.
Drama
Participation in plays in the target language, production of a mini multi-lingual newspaper from time to time.
Meals
Group visits to relevant restaurants.
Competitions
Students may be chosen to participate in special exams/competitions run by external organisations (e.g. Alliance Française, Indonesian Embassy, Australian Languages group, UNITEC Japanese Competition, Japanese Speech Contest)
