It is often hard for the outsider to gain an understanding of the school. People see and hear of the wonderful results of the students. They know of the reputation for the expertise of the staff and the quality of the teaching. But they wonder what is at the core of the organization such is its size, complexity and scope.

The essence of the school is that it puts great teachers together with great students. It gives each the resources, facilities and freedom to get on with learning. It adapts the best of both traditional and modern teaching and assessment pedagogy. Results are constantly reviewed and targets set to bring improvement.

Rangitoto College has a large student population but this size does not mean that the individual is neglected, quite the opposite. It allows us to cater for all the diverse needs of students. This is illustrated in part by the over 50 different course options on offer and over the over 40 co-curricular activities available in each of the Sports, Arts and cultural sections of the school. The school also has a wide range of student support and guidance services available to assist individuals realize their potential.

Rangitoto College has a strong focus on academic achievement and our top students regularly gain ‘top scholar’ awards and scholarships to prestigious universities. At the same time programmes are in place to meet the needs of all students including those with recognized learning needs or for whom English is a second language.

The school has an enviable reputation for the achievements of its elite athletes who are helped and assisted by a high performance sports programme, and a very strong emphasis is also placed on participation in physical activity that supports a healthy lifestyle.

The Performing Arts programme in the college complements the achievements in sport. Young musicians, dancers and actors have the opportunity to excel in both the classical forms of their craft as well as the modern styles. A budding pianist can move from orchestra rehearsal to the rock room with ease.

The success of Rangitoto College students in all areas of school life has at its foundation an ethos of hard work and discipline. Every child is encouraged to set their own goals and expectations and given the encouragement and support they need to achieve. As a result, the school has a calm and purposeful tone (but without the oppressiveness of some institutions). Success is celebrated and rewarded.

Rangitoto College is the school of choice for students from the local community. Every year hundreds of students apply for the limited number of balloted places.
